Topic > The energy content of foods - 2297

The energy content is an important property of foods. The energy your body needs to run, talk and think comes from the food you eat. For this project I conducted an experiment on different types of nuts where I aimed to determine how much energy was stored in these nuts. The experiment was performed by burning these nuts to heat a container full of water and calculating the temperature change that occurs. Using the change in temperature, the amount of energy released by burning nuts could be calculated. My hypothesis for this project will be: “Is there variation in the energy contained in food based on overall size, weight, origin and texture? “.Research has also been conducted on energy in foods and on the factors that influence this energy. Some factors have a greater influence on this amount than others. Through research it has been discovered that the greatest influence on the weight of food is given by energy-containing substances such as carbohydrates, fatty oils and proteins. This correlates well with the results of the experiment, showing that the weight of the substance has a large influence on the amount of energy contained in the food. In the hypothesis, it was stated that it will be tested whether the texture would have an influence on the amount of energy in the nuts. The experiment was inconclusive in terms of the energy and texture of the nuts. Since there is insufficient evidence that the texture of dried fruit influences the amount of energy contained, it is not possible to draw a conclusion in terms of any food.
