Mucus, a slimy substance, helps lubricate intestinal contents and transport them through the intestines. The ileocecal valve that separates the small intestine from the large intestine is traversed by chyme, approximately 1.5 to 2 liters (0.4 to 0.5 gallons) per day (Rogers, 2010). The large intestine can be divided into a few parts including the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon. As mentioned above, the large intestine works to absorb water, maintain osmolality, and store fecal material until the process of defecation.
