Reduced job availability leads to higher divorce rates and family divisions. If there is not enough money to support a spouse and children, some people feel they have no choice but to go their separate ways. Socioeconomic problems are much more prevalent in low-income, high-unemployment areas. Areas where residents live without businesses and have been so for an extended period have a sharp increase in crime compared to those that are more stable. In one particular study, researchers found that a 20% drop in men's wages resulted in a 10.8% increase in property crime and a 21.6% increase in violent crime. Violence and theft are increasing because people are increasingly desperate. If people are busy working they don't have time to go out and cause problems; they don't need to steal or cause fights with their neighbors. It is not just the United States where this trend is observed. If we expand our vision beyond America's urban centers and look at the developing world, much of the turbulence is caused by and linked to regions of low economic prosperity. A state of unemployment and lack of money lays the foundation for many of the world's biggest problems. Giving more money to those who are out of work does not solve these problems in a struggling economy. It just makes it harder for them to get back to work, the longer they've done it
