Ideas have a lot of value in the world. If there were no diversity in the world, everything and everyone would be too similar. The real purpose of living in the world is to have a kind of individualism. Ideas play an important role in human interaction because when you talk to someone, ideas are exchanged back and forth in the conversation. Another part of the importance of ideas in human interaction is that ideas allow two or more people to have contrasting ideas so that people can learn from each other. Individual ideas can create emotions and relationships with other people. Ideas can conflict with what someone else thinks and can possibly bring two people closer together or create something new. Ideas fuel the world by advancing technology and an example of this is when Montag meets Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse was talking to Montag about how much she enjoys talking with her family and taking walks to observe nature. This portrays the loss of individuality because Montag was shocked that Clarisse enjoys interacting with other people and being outside rather than staying inside watching television and ignoring her family like everyone else. According to Barash, "each of us cherishes our own individual and separate personality, placing great importance on the 'fact' that we are different from everyone else." This information reinforces the fact that individuals must be different. The loss of individuality is represented in Fahrenheit 451 in many different ways. Gouveia says individuality is an important component in making a person feel part of something bigger than themselves. If this were lost, people around the world would feel alone and depressed. An example of this in Fahrenheit 451 is when Montag's wife tries to overdose on sleeping pills because she, like everyone else, is depressed and lonely.
