Already in the age of the cavemen, if not before, we have invaded the land of others and attempted to prevent the invasion of our own. Acquiring and protecting land and food is in animal nature and this drive serves as the primary motivation for imperialist expansion. With more land and more access to food, a particular culture may have many more opportunities to expand and thrive.
