Many religious critics have questioned Christianity due to the simple fact of “blind faith.” This means faith in the unseen or believing in something you have never seen in person. St. Augustine of Hippo, a very influential Christian theologian, explored this in his essay “Concerning Faith Unseen.” He points out that many people refuse to believe in something they cannot see for themselves. What drives Christians to believe in God if they have never seen him with their own eyes? Our minds are crazy to believe things that cannot be seen and therefore it is right to believe them. Augustine's main argument is that all people believe things they have never seen for themselves. Augustine uses this example: We choose to believe in our friends when we first meet that we will have a good friendship and it will work. The invisible part is that we trust each other without ever knowing what the future holds. Just as those who believe in God give their faith to an "invisible" being. Augustine believes that because those who deny the idea of believing in God because he is invisible but believe in the good will of others, their belief system is inconsistent. If they can believe in the good will of others but cannot believe in a supreme being, then what do they really believe. We put our faith in a friend without knowing that he or she is a true friend just as Christians put their faith in God without seeing it with their own eyes. This is the same in all human relationships. We give our heart to our spouse or friend without knowing what the future holds for us. The question Augustine raises is how we can put faith in a friend or spouse but cannot put faith in God. Christians believe that one day... middle of paper ......those who believe in God will believe that a one day he will meet the Lord face to face. Faith is something that can be difficult to understand because it is based on things that may or may not be true. It can be very difficult for people to understand this concept because it is like gambling. Augustine wants people to understand that they already do this in their daily relationships. If they can give their faith in a human relationship, then they can give their faith in the “invisible” God. Works Cited Agostino. On the faith of things not seen, 2012. StampaAgostino.
