“Aten-hut!” - shouted the major as he left the office. Then I was sitting calmly, without warning everyone stood up in unison in about a fraction of a second. Trying not to attract attention, I stood up, not realizing that I wasn't far enough from the desk. It made a huge jingle and an endless echo that haunted me throughout the class. All eyes were on me; how embarrassing! The Major was coming out of his office, he was located at the back of the room, his voice was deep at least when he gave a command. I focused on his steps, as if I were eavesdropping on a conversation between two girls gossiping. My eyes were fixed on the board as he approached the front of the room. I read the date, November 18, 2006, repeatedly to try to keep the terror from building up. They all looked like robots, their chests barely moved, and their eyes were dry from shortness of breath and wouldn't blink. A horror theme song was playing in my head, the one that would be played in a movie when anticipating an intense moment; danuum, danuum, danum danum. Time seems to have stopped because it was an eternal wait for him to finally arrive at the front, I felt a sigh of relief; he seemed like a good man. “Hey kid, how are you today?” As he browsed through all the faces, mine seemed to have caught his attention. "Who are you?" The line of his hair almost met his eyebrows with mountains of wrinkles in between. It must have been his curious face. "I... I'm Kathy Baez, I'm a new student." I tried to swallow the saliva that was building in my mouth before drowning in the fog of my stutter. "Where do you come from?" Michael Krop they had the Navy JROTC, sir” “Meet everyone, our new cadet.” He had a Spanish accent, when... halfway down the paper... he was about to back away. Their uniforms were not much different from ours, they had a black and white cord on the right shoulder and an insignia on the flight cap; when we saw an officer approaching we had to salute. Knowing I had the opportunity to join such a recognized group, I took it in a heartbeat. From that moment on I was unstoppable, the following year I became a squadron commander and vice president of Kitty Hawk, a JROTC honor society. I was a leader, I had achieved my goal, but I not only wanted to be a leader but to involve my cadets and assist them as Wendy did for me. When my squadron performed well and impressed the Major, an irresistible feeling of happiness and success would come over me like a cold shiver with goosebumps from my toes to the tips of my blonde hair. I have seen them blossom into mature cadets; I was honored to be part of their improvement, of our success!
