Kierkegaard, a highly regarded philosopher of the 19th century, proposed the idea of living life in three different phases. He called these phases Aesthetic, Ethical and Religious. He himself went through each phase of his life and adopted them as his philosophy of human existence. The first two phases are characterized by a distinct set of easily identifiable beliefs and behaviors, while the last phase, the religious one, is characterized by a highly personal, subjective and non-rational “leap of faith”. The ideal is to progress from the aesthetic to the ethical, finally reaching the religious phase but as Kierkegaard himself intuited, it is possible to regress or go back a phase. He said he felt he never really left the first two, these stages were always there. He believed that one could enter and exit and go through all three phases throughout one's life. For the purposes of this essay I will explain each of the three stages to provide an understanding of Kierkegaard's philosophical theory of life. Furthermore, I will discuss why Kierkegaard considered the religious phase to be the best kind of life for humanity and I will present some criticisms against Kierkegaard's third phase: the aesthetic phase. This stage is defined by immediacy and the inability to seriously reflect on the nature of one's way of life. Those who live in the aesthetic phase are said to be slaves to their senses, satisfying needs and impulses as the body feels them. They possess qualities of immediacy and indulgence: they live only for the moment and do what they want. They are motivated by their desires and emotions. What they consider 'good' is what gives them pleasure, not what is... middle of paper... h, his child would be spared. Religions A and B, although both based on blind faith differ in that, as Kierkegaard saw it, religiosity B allows one's own thoughts. It involves having a faith unique to oneself based on the ability to search within oneself for truth and answers. It differs from that of "organized" religiosity A. Even those who live religious life A have a very strong faith but have been criticized for following a herd mentality. This is supported because they go to organized religious ceremonies held by a priest*. It is believed that those who live in this faith do not think or act for themselves. Instead, they allow someone to dictate to them how they should act, behave, and think.*A priest is a figure who for centuries has been seen as "called" by God to spread His word and show people how to live to please Him..
