Is society too selfish? In Hunters in the Snow, Tobias Wolfe illustrates humanity's selfishness and self-centeredness through the actions of his characters. The story opens with three friends embarking on their usual hunting routine; their names are Frank, Kenny and Tub. Throughout the story there are several moments of tension and discussions that, essentially, expose the flaws of each man: they are all narcissistic. Through his writings in Hunters in the Snow, Wolfe conveys that humanity's ultimate fault is selfishness and lack of consideration given to others. Throughout the story, there are several events that exemplify a callous and presumptuous mind. -set. Kenny, for example, doesn't care about others around him; he is extremely self-centered. In one part, for example, he jokingly but dangerously runs Tub off the road with his vehicle. In this way, Kenny shows a careless side; a part that cares neither about hurting others nor about himself. According to him, fun comes before anything else; therefore, hurting Tub was never a consideration. He also mercilessly teases Tub about his weight when Kenny knows it's a sensitive and upsetting topic for Tub. Frank is also very self-centered as he is willing to leave his wife for their fifteen-year-old babysitter, who has just finished half of high school. The third main character, Tub, is also quite narcissistic as he becomes extremely defensive when it comes to his weight as he allows Kenny's teasing to offend him; therefore, Tub is selfish as he is fixated on his image. As the story, Hunters in the Snow, progresses, the characters' selfish behaviors become even more apparent given the lack of sympathy when Kenny is seriously injured. Both Tub and Frank, for example, don't react the way most friends would; as moral and compassionate friends would. Surprisingly, Tub, the individual who shoots Kenny in self-defense, shows neither guilt nor remorse for his action as he watches his hunting partner collapse in pain. Tub and Frank pay no attention to Kenny's anguish as he lies in excruciating pain; basically, neither shows any remorse for their friend's pain. For example, both men are in no rush to transport Kenny to the hospital as they decide to stop at a tavern to warm up and leave Kenny in the truck in utter distress..
