While Suetonius' writings of Nero may pose a risk of bias, similar perversions have been discussed within Edward Champlin's "Neros Reconsidered". Champlin discusses Nero's descent into debauchery and illicit behavior; how his personal exploits gradually began to corrupt his political and military affairs (Champlin, 1990). Nero began to alienate and persecute much of the elite for higher interests in personal matters, as well as completely neglecting military advancements and affairs. Nero's exorbitant personal affairs and expenses left the treasury completely depleted. His period was characterized by deflation as money shortages began to emerge (Champlin, 1990). Nero's adolescence and undisciplined upbringing contributed largely to his inadequacy during his years as Roman emperor. While Nero contributed significantly to the city, his reign demonstrated the unraveling of the Roman Empire
