As a second language learner, English is one of the most difficult subjects for me to learn. As a young girl I was taught phonics and the alphabet. As the years went by, I learned to put those letters together to turn words, sentences, and ultimately paragraphs into essays. My English increases every year and every year my English grows without understanding. When I got to English 908, my whole new perspective changed. I realized that writing is much more than simply putting words on paper. I have achieved a number of goals that I once thought were unattainable. This English 908 course has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and way of thinking in writing. The first lesson I learned is that of essay professor Mahoney, we read in the class called "The Silk Parachute". Professor Mahoney taught me about structures and how to use concrete details to make my ideas clear and supported. For example, in my described essay describing my mother, I learn to use concrete details to avoid generalities so that the reader can have a better visualization in my described essay, for example, instead of saying “My mother is a kind woman and strong, "I can say:" My mother raised me with all her kind heart and is the kind of persistent woman with strong willpower who had to face the most difficult challenges in life. This concrete detail creates an image vivid in the reader's mind to help increase interest in the essay During English 908 class, I learned to use many new vocabulary in my essay because Professor Mahoney helped students, including myself, learn to memorize new ones. vocabulary and how to use it correctly. Memorizing new vocabulary helps me express complex ideas and keeps me from…standing in the middle of the paper…grammar problems are not an easy thing to solve every time I write an essay. I would always have grammar problems during my essays. Professor Mahoney often gives me feedback on how I should improve my grammar by reading aloud to myself. In this way, it helps me a lot to realize my grammatical problems. Furthermore, it makes me understand what is missing and what I need to add in that sentence to have an understandable sentence. It may be simple, but in my own way it helps me a lot. Therefore, my understanding of grammatical issues is not fully defined, but it is still improving every day. With the end of the term, I think this semester has been a great journey for me so far because I have learned a lot, including the fact that I still have a lot to learn. I hope to continue to improve my writing skills as a student so that I can be successful in my future career.
