Topic > Kashmir: the unresolved question - 1485

About 19 years have passed; I grew up watching the news, listening to the radio about the poor voice of Kashmiris held hostage for over half a century. Who suffered violence from none other than our so called friend Bharat, who acted sarcastically with Kashmiris. When we talk about Pakistan's role in this fundamental issue, we don't actually see any major role but yes, we organize demonstrations, we form human chains; we organize exhibitions, we organize seminars, we talk about change but never from the heart, we regularly observe many leaders making their false promises especially on Kashmir day. In reality Pakistan has neither compromised its position on the Kashmir issue nor allowed any prejudice to the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people. Since India is characterized by a suspicious rivalry, even though many issues divide the two countries, the most sensitive one after independence has been the status of Kashmir. Since it is an issue not only of Pakistan but also of Bharat. More than any other region, it is the people of South Asia, particularly Pakistan and India, who are most in need of sustainable peace and stable progress and this will remain unique until their leaders and governments resolve the main dispute of Kashmir. Kashmir is not the only unresolved issue, but it is the most important one. Once the negotiation process on Kashmir makes credible progress, the resolution of other issues will automatically follow. It is true that all the unresolved issues in Pakistan-India relations may take months, or even years, to be resolved in a way that suits the two sides.... middle of paper... dia venture After rapprochement between Islamabad and New Delhi in January 2004, and with the resumption of a composite dialogue covering Kashmir and other unresolved issues, it is hoped that the Kashmir story will soon come full circle. However, for this to happen, the Indian leadership must show some courage and boldness in responding sincerely to the recent overtures of the Pakistani leadership on Kashmir. The roadmap for peace, produced by foreign minister-level talks in February, includes a timetable for discussing the Siachen letter later in the year. A Siachen solution, for which there is already precedent in the form of an agreement, will certainly act as a catalyst for the Kashmir solution. In the context of Kashmir, the only solution that can be ruled out is to do nothing. Time will not solve the Kashmir problem. The weather has made things worse in Kashmir.
