Divorce has become a big problem in today's society. Divorce rates have continued to increase since 2000 and more specifically since no-fault divorce became legal in the 1970s (“Dealing”). There are many ways you can get a divorce; for example, there is fault and no-fault divorce, mediated divorce, collaborative divorce, and others (“Several”). The emotional effects of divorce on people and the moral issues related to divorce are the greatest concern in the United States. There have been many debates about whether divorce is morally correct or not. The lasting effects on people emotionally are also concerning. Divorce is the end of a legal marriage; it is harmful to society and morally wrong in most cases, and divorce rates must decrease dramatically to protect this nation from its lasting negative effects. Divorce can elicit many different reactions from children. They may start out in denial or experience feelings of abandonment; some react with anger and hostility, become depressed, or experience feelings of guilt or blame (“psychological”). Denial is the usual reaction of younger children; they will fantasize and make up stories about family activities they will carry out (“Psychology”). They will believe that both parents will remain in their lives as normal and that nothing significant will change. Children also fear abandonment at a young age when their parents divorce. They believe that because their parents abandoned each other, they too will be abandoned (“Psychological”). This problem can get worse if one or both parents try to turn the child against the other parent. The child may take one parent's side and begin to see the other parent as the bad guy.
