In Gloria Steinem's print, “Supremacy Crimes,” she writes, “White males – usually intelligent, middle-class and heterosexual, or desperately trying to appear this way – they also represent virtually all serial, sadistic, sexually motivated murders, those characterized by stalking, imprisonment, torture, and “detention” of the victims in death” (491). Now that all media, especially television news, covers more topics, and thanks to today's technology, they are able to learn about murders and other crimes more quickly. This media coverage is desensitizing men who commit crimes. Since the news now covers almost every petty crime, it is giving those influential white, middle-class, heterosexual males different ideas about what they might do to a person they don't necessarily like. Just as it is giving men different ideas, it is also making women more aware of what could happen if they left their home with someone of the opposite attitude
