The minimum wage is not intended for a single parent or a single person to live on as their sole income. The real reason the minimum wage was established was to ensure fair wages for work. These wages were set for people who could not get a higher paying job due to their abilities. These people were usually people with low intellectual abilities, young people or high school seniors. Most workers earning minimum wage today are young adults who work only part-time. Even older workers earning the minimum wage typically work part time. They are working for additional money alongside their salary from a full-time job.
