My week started with Janet informing me that she had no PC/bond cases for the next couple of days and that I didn't have much to do (which was initially disappointing, as I thought he always had court cases). However, being a recent intern herself, she knew I would be discouraged, she took the trouble to find an interesting case for me to go see and even introduced me to the prosecuting attorneys and the other victim advocate so that they knew who I was there and why I was there. I felt this was a commendable thing of him; I appreciated that he took the initiative and found something that would interest me. The case involved a man who was being tried for child molestation, which included rape and sodomy numerous times against both his 6-year-old stepdaughter and his 4-year-old biological daughter. On the first day, I participated in jury selection; this was interesting because I was able to observe the lawyer's questions to 4 different groups of potential jurors. Long story short, it took us most of the day to agree on the 12 jurors. The last part of the afternoon was dedicated to the oath and opening statements. That night, all I could do when I got home was think about the defendant and why he would do this to those little girls. It was hard to shake the thoughts; I could see how this part of the job for a victim advocate would be challenging because it involved innocent children. The next day I was able to witness the testimony of the children's mother, the defendant's ex-girlfriend. This hour and a half long testimony and cross examination was sad, the woman cried several times on the witness stand, she trusted this man to take care of her children, 2 of which were his while he worked 40+ hours per week to support the whole family.
