Travis Hirschi presented a social bond theory in 1969. The main idea of social bond theory is that each individual has an impulse to act in selfish and even aggressive ways that could lead to criminal behavior. Social bond theory has some similarities to Durkheim's theory that “we are all animals, and therefore naturally capable of committing criminal acts” (Tibbetts, 2012, p. 162). However, the more a person is connected to conventional society, for example to family, school, community, the less inclined he is to be involved in criminal activities. The great example of this would be the serial killer Nannie Doss. From an early age he had no connection either to his family with an abusive father or to the community in which he lived. For most of the time during her childhood she was isolated from any social interaction with her schoolmates or friends. Hirschi's social bond consists of four elements:1. Attachment2. Commitment3. Involvement4. Moral Belief Attachment is a key element in social bonding, which consists of “affectionate bonds between an individual and his or her significant others” (Tibbetts, 2012, p. 163). For Hirschi, parents and school are very important and critical elements of attachment. Those who form close attachments to their parents and school usually experience greater levels of social control. For example, Nannie Doss had no connection especially with her parents. Hirschi states that “the stronger one's early attachments, the less likely one is to act inappropriately” (Tibbetts, 2012, p.163). Furthermore, Nannie Doss had no social interaction with her friends or peers because her father did not allow her to attend school and have friends. Therefore, Na...... middle of paper ......a person with strong values and good moral beliefs, the idea of getting married and poisoning your husband just to get insurance money would seem crazy. But there are different personality types, and for individuals like Nannie Doss, it might seem perfectly acceptable to act this way. He had “a head injury at the age of seven” (Montaldo, 2013, p. 1A), so he may have seen things differently than others. Those who share the belief that killing a person to make money is wrong are less likely to kill someone. Hirschi's social ties represent mechanisms of informal social control. Therefore it is extremely important to create the conditions for healthy attachment from early childhood. The stronger the commitments to families, schools, or mainstream society, the less likely people are to become involved in criminal or deviant behavior..
