Fredrick Douglas, formerly known as Fredrick Bailey, was born into slavery in 1818. He remained in slavery until he escaped in 1838 at the age of 20. After becoming a free man, he was one of the greatest abolitionists of his time. However, before he was free, he passed through the hands of many slave owners, masters, and exploiters. It all began when he was born into Colonel Edward Lloyd's slave workforce. Colonel Lloyd was a very wealthy man who owned more slaves than he could count, including Douglas and most of his family. Colonel Lloyd was not a fair man, he demanded much more than he should even from his slaves and often punished them even when they didn't deserve it. Captain Anthony was an employee of Colonel Lloyd and did most of the day-to-day dealings with Colonel Lloyd's estates and slaves. So he was Douglass's first teacher. Captain Anthony, got his name from sailing the Chesapeake Bay, and was no stranger to the whip. He often whipped slaves for no reason.
