Whether competitive or simply recreational, gamers represent a unique subculture. They consist of people of all ages, young and old, as well as both genders. It's a worldwide community and it's constantly growing every time a parent buys their child a console, PC or tablet for the holidays. Many people are surprised to actually hear or see female gamers. It's more common every year, in my opinion. People have an image of prepubescent boys covered in pimples who are the only active gamers, and are most likely the most frequent gamers, but gender and age do not define gamers or speak to player skill. Since the birth of Nintendo, my family has gone from the limited graphics of Atari to the amazing colors and animations of Super Mario Brothers. Everyone played; my older sisters and two brothers, our cousins and friends. However, most grew up playing and remaining stationary as my brothers and I continued on to other platforms.
