To Kill a Mockingbird was and still is one of the best of English literature. To Kill a Mockingbird immediately became a best seller and even won the Pulitzer Prize. This essay is about this book; Killing a Mockingbird is a famous quote from a character in this book that concerns a very important lesson that is taught. The main character of this book is a young girl and her brother and they learn many things. By learning from examples, children can be more courageous. By making an honest mistake, you can teach children to be more respectful. And last but not least, through teaching children learn not to damage anything that has not caused any harm. The entire essay is about children's early errors in judgment, teaching them a valuable lesson, which will help them make more mature decisions later. By being taught courage, children are able to be more courageous. In the early parts of the novel Jem gets into an angry confrontation with Mrs. Dubose as he passes her house. Jem becomes angry and later in the story cuts off the heads of all the flowers in Mrs. Dubose's garden thinking that this action was an act of courage. As punishment, Atticus made Jem read to Mrs. Dubose for a month. At first Jem thought it would be the worst thing ever, but after a while he realizes that she's not that bad. After Mrs. Dubose's death, Atticus tells Jem of Mrs. Dubose's courage. From this Jem learns the meaning of true courage. After Mrs. Dubose's death, Atticus said to Jem, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun" (Lee 149). Atticus is telling Jem what true courage is and how Mrs. Dubose is addicted to morphine and how she swore...... middle of paper ......r with a "Because they don't bother you" ( Lee 320) this was a very mature decision because the bug didn't bother anyone. If this had happened before Atticus taught them the lesson, Scout probably would have swatted the bug and Jem would never have intervened. By learning from Atticus, children learn not to harm innocent things. The first mistake children make teaches them important lessons that help them make better judgments later in life. By meeting courageous people, children learn to have courage. By being taught by adults, children have learned to be more respectful. By learning from intelligent individuals, children learn not to harm innocent beings. This essay includes three lessons among the many that children learned throughout the novel. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird has many hidden meanings and lessons that people can learn.
