Often borrows words associated with Christianity as metaphors. For example, in his poem “Success is considered the sweetest,” he writes, “Not one of all the guests violates” (Dickinson 844). In this poem about success, he refers to the "purple host" that is Jesus Christ. The color purple is associated with kings and royalty; it is also a combination of the colors blue (representing trust and law) and red (blood). Also, note that the word "guest" is capitalized, which can be a sign of respect or authority. This is later confirmed towards the end of the poem when he writes, “As he defeated – dying” (844).
