Who is Achilles, you ask? Because only the greatest war hero of all time. Achilles was the son of Peleus, king of Phthia, a city in Thessaly, and of Thetis, a sea goddess. According to myth, Zeus had slept Thetis. But, when he discovered that she was pregnant, Zeus learned from Prometheus that the son Thetis was giving birth to would grow older than his father. Zeus did not want to suffer the same fate as his father when he overthrew him, so Zeus decided that Thetis would not marry any god. So, she chose Peleus as her future husband. Meanwhile, Peleus' first wife, Antigone, had killed herself, distraught that her husband had cheated on her. The marriage between Thetis and Peleus was the best known in Greek mythology. All the gods and goddesses were invited and they all brought many gifts. Thetis received a magnificent crown studded with jewels. To Peleus the gods brought two immortal horses, Xanthus and Balius, but left Pegasus at home. When Achilles was born, his mother Thetis did what any good mother would do and tried to make him happy...
