Giotto Di Bondone was one of the first artists to pursue a naturalistic approach to representation based on observation, as well as portraying the illusions of emotions and real-life landscapes. Born in Florence in 1266, Giotto was a fresco artist who revolutionized painting techniques, breaking away from the rigid training that had been the basis of painting. It is said that it was discovered by Cimabue while he was painting a lamb on a rock in his country house. Giotto's early works stylistically reflected those of his mentor Cimabue; however, it had already begun to demonstrate original pictorial characteristics. Through the use of naturalistic observation, atmospheric perspective and humanistic expressive methods, he transformed his painting from the flat Byzantine style into a natural work full of Renaissance life.
