The Equal Pay ActIn my experience I have not dealt with the Equal Pay Act nor was I sufficiently educated to be aware of the details of which this act consists. I used to work for a well known and profitable bank which I won't name or maybe I should. The situation was that, as a high-level employee, I had more responsibilities than other employees. The company was made up of both women and men, the ratio was one to eight men, so women dominated in employees and management. Most employees handled customer service calls on a regular basis. I myself have dealt with small business, home equity, consumer lending and Spanish service calls. I received the same pay as other employees and could not advance in management with recognition of the additional tasks I was performing. I went to the human resources department to understand why this was happening and why I wasn't getting the promotion I worked hard to achieve. I ran and didn't get a straight answer. It seemed like I wasn't in what you call a "groupie" or a certain group called a "click", which to me doesn't mean a single or married woman with kids. I finally left the bank and made only ninety-five cents more than regular employees make. If I had known more about the act, I would have made sure this didn't happen to anyone and I would have gotten the promotion I worked so hard for. I ultimately concluded that the HR specialist was biased and that the call center workforce was a "woman's" world.
