This reminds me of Shakespeare's sister in A Room of One's Own... even though she is just as talented, if not more, than her brother, her talent is wasted on because of its gender. Miss Representation shows how the media has significantly influenced us and helps shape the way we think. In movies/TV, magazines and billboards, we see Photoshopped models in their bikinis and this can be very dangerous for girls and boys. We don't see the strong women who are changing the world on magazine covers. The exposure and attention a woman receives from her body leads women to think that their value lies in their appearance. Furthermore, most of the celebrities and models are All-American. This simply does not represent our society. In The House on Mango Street, Esperanza talks about how she is the ugly one in the family and envies Sally, the girl that all the boys fawn over. If our society wasn't so superficial and manufactured we would have more women in higher positions. For a long time, women were never pushed into the role of CEO of a company because that was men's job. About a woman taking over from a man, ABC's Commander in Chief was a visionary but short-lived TV series about the first female president of the United States, starring Geena Davis. On the show I played Geena Davis' daughter and at the time the press asked me how this revolutionary concept came about.
