Military members who share harsh, traumatic, or even humorous events obviously grow closer through the bond of mutual experience. This is especially true for marine infantry; Many Marines grew up in different areas of the United States, with different values, ages, religious and political beliefs. As different as we all may seem from the outside, the fact that we have all experienced good times and bad times together brings us closer than any civilian can understand. After being a Marine, I found that I am closer, and always will be, to my civilian friends who I have known for years. Along with this, Pressfield talks about how, beneath all the glory and glamor of fighting for one's country, there exists the real reason why warriors fight; for our brothers in arms. Political beliefs, government positions and flags are thrown out the window, only to be replaced by concern for the safety and well-being of the men to our left and right. All of these things are the reasons why it is difficult for civilians to understand what it means to be a warrior.
