The amount of literature devoted to gaining wisdom is limitless and continues to grow every day. Unfortunately, the subject matter of most books centers on worldly wisdom. It should come as no surprise that God's Word also contains wisdom. However his wisdom is rather foolish to the world. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians makes this clear as he takes stock of the Corinthian congregation:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world did not know him through his wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what was preached. 22The Jews ask for miraculous signs and the Greeks seek wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a scandal to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25Because the God's foolishness is wiser than man's wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than man's strength. (I Cor. 1:20-25 New International Version 1984) Paul was not the first to speak of the wisdom that comes from God. The Book of Proverbs places a high value on wisdom, both worldly and spiritual, but even worldly wisdom is based on our relationship with the Lord, as Solomon states: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (Proverbs 9:10).” The value of this type of wisdom is seen especially in the family. Television, radio and books talk about family values and how to form a better family unit. The world knows the danger that the Proverbs stated thousands of years ago: “He who causes trouble for his family will inherit only wind…half of the paper…and will mature as disciples of Christ. When this happens, children not only gain a better understanding of God's Word, but they also grow in the love of their Heavenly Father. Since so much of our happiness or lack of happiness depends on our family life, we should want to consider taking advantage of the wisdom offered in this area by the book of Proverbs. Praise God that He loves us and wants to see us succeed in this life. But His praise is even greater, because He has removed the guilt of sin from our lives. Without this last blessing, the first would be in vain. God has given parents an amazing gift to raise the children God has given them. Parents would do well to learn from the book of Proverbs for practical advice. But even more, all Christians should foster an environment that raises children in the grace and peace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ..
