The word crucible describes an event that involves a test or proof of someone or something. In Arthur Miller's story The Crucible, various characters endure a severe test of honesty, courage and goodness. Throughout the story, a series of events lead to tragedies, which involve these characters making important decisions. If chosen incorrectly, it could lead to the death of another innocent person, or perhaps even oneself. These events, however, will bring out the true character of everyone in Salem, whether they are truly good or evil. Abigail is a case in point of someone who was severely interrogated during The Crucible. One reason is her relationship with John Proctor. This affair leads to a trail of corrupt actions. This is because Abigail wanted Goody Proctor dead, since she wanted John all to herself. She knew very well that if she had simply never told those terrible lies, she would never have been in this situation, and neither would all the other innocent people. She decided to continue lying to save her own skin, which shows that Abigail is selfish and is willing to do anything to get back at Elizabeth for blackening her name in Salem. One characteristic that helps Abigail challenge her dishonesty was her talent for doing so. manipulate others. He decided to use this ability to condemn other innocent people, just to take the blame away from himself. She made the gruesome decision to turn her back on God, confessing lies, while being falsely regarded as a heroine by court officials and anyone else naive enough to believe her. For example, at the beginning of the story, he falsely confessed that he saw the devil and wrote in his book. He said he wanted to return to God and receive His light. He fooled almost everyone by doing so... middle of the card... they refuse to give up their integrity and go against God. This shows that they are much braver than Hale, because they will die before selling their soul to the devil. Hale ends up having to live with this corruption that he allowed to happen. This shows that he wasn't very brave after all, because he barely did what was right and lost the battle between good and evil. A crucible is a severe test or ordeal. The story The Crucible strongly supports this definition, because nearly every character in The Crucible has been tested in some way. This whether it was a test of character, honesty, loyalty, courage or goodness within oneself. In some cases, they were tried against their will and in others they willingly witnessed evil. For others, it was a test within themselves, to find the truth about what evil truly is and not to let it prevail over their goodness...
