One of the first documented uses of the death penalty occurred in 16th century BC Egypt. The number of deaths was established in the United States in 1608. There were many different tactics used to be carried out before the laws were passed. Several different tactics such as stoning, being burned alive, crucifixion, drowning, being buried alive, implementation and in many cases people were boiled alive which took up to two hours for most of the time. In 1612, Virginia Governor Sir Thomas Dale passed the Divine, Moral, and Martial Laws that made even minor crimes punishable by death. Crimes such as stealing grapes, killing chickens, killing dogs and horses without permission, or trading with Indians. In 1619 Sir Thomas Dale softened the laws out of fear that no one would settle in Virginia. In Britain the number of capital crimes increased until 1700, of which 222 were punishable by law.
