Nurses have both learning and teaching responsibilities. Continuing education for nurses is very important to maintain their knowledge and skills in healthcare development. While it is true that the ability to teach is a complex process, a fundamental part of this process is the learner's ability to receive information, process the information and put it into practice. Learning is a change in human ability or ability to want to learn and act on learning (Blais, Hayes, Kozier, & Erb, 2006); it is a transformation of behaviors, existing knowledge, skills and values to change an area of need to become better as an individual. When teaching how to use the EpiPen, the following components are applied and planned: detailed assessment of the student, objectives of the student, defined topic and outline for the student, teaching materials and methods, teaching sessions focused on recording the interpersonal process and finally an evaluation of the teaching plan provided via return demonstration. Student Assessment - Level of Prior Knowledge The student is a young person who has worked in a construction company and is attending university to earn a degree in nursing. His previous learning and knowledge experiences might include that he studied in a medical school for four years but never finished, he has some knowledge of some types of medical procedures, and he has intellectual ability. He is also a person who plays sports and is physically active. This student has sufficient knowledge of anatomy and physiology and first aid during an emergency or shock case. All this information was obtained through a verbal interview of previous training and learning experiences. A...... middle of the paper ......or hold the EpiPen firmly in the correct position for about 10 seconds.” Demonstration“Call 911 immediately. The EpiPen is a device designed to be used in an emergency situation, in case of an allergic reaction, giving you time to get to the hospital.” “Thank you for giving me this opportunity to teach how to use the EpiPen and how to save a person's life.” You are prepared to intervene in a life-threatening situation.” Interaction Analysis The student's question demonstrates a willingness to learn. Clarification on how it can be administered through clothing and by direct contact with the skin. Reinforce the correct administration technique and demonstration of the return provided by the student. Positive reinforcement provided and clarification of next step reinforcement. This provides positive reinforcement.
