Topic > Character Analysis of Joe Gargery in Great Expectations...

This is a fact that can be seen through his loving and caring nature towards those who love him and through his many acts of kindness. However, as a protagonist he also has his weaknesses. He rarely shows himself to be powerful or self-determined, instead reacting to those around him and living his life as a romantic. Pip's idealism often leads him to perceive the world in his own way, starting from his ideas, rather than as it really is. This is a problem for him because it leads him to behave badly towards the people who take care of him. For example, when Pip tries to behave like a gentleman, he behaves as he thinks a gentleman would behave, which leads him to treat Joe and Biddy badly.
