Genetically Modified Foods: Harmful to NatureThe process of genetically modified (GM) foods is the way of the future, it is promised to help eliminate world hunger around the world. Genetically modified foods will create healthier, drought-tolerant crops that won't need sprayed chemicals, but that's not the case. Genetically modified foods are not safe due to the many organisms in foods that can affect the body, which has not yet been identified. It is estimated that 2/3 of US supermarkets may contain genetically modified foods or genetically modified ingredients. Genetically modified foods can cause allergies, destroy ecosystems and are dangerous to eat. Therefore they should not be allowed to distribute them in our supermarkets. Genetically modified foods are a health hazard and will not improve anything except create more global problems. Genetically modified foods should not be confused with hybrid crops. Hybrid crops are plants that crossbreed with other plants producing better offspring for consumer consumption. Genetically modified foods are plants whose DNA has been tampered with or mixed with another gene or chemical, producing a brand new strand of DNA. It is believed that when you mix DNA and genes into genetically modified foods it will create a more nutritious and long-lasting fruit or plant for the consumer. Producing new strands of DNA can be deadly, as it can produce wild results that may not be controllable. What is not known is that, with perhaps fatal consequences for the consumer, it is not known how the human body can react to tampered food. As stated previously, genetically modified foods have probably already been eaten at least once by the population. Once again 2/3 of the US has genetically modified foods in their supermarkets. With a high percentage, people wonder what the long-term effects on food consumption might be. The most altered crop is soybeans, the second most altered crop is corn. Soybeans are an ingredient used in almost everything we eat or consume, found in milk, candy, cookies, bread, ice cream and even baby food. This means that genetically modified foods can be present in anything we eat and we won't even know it, nor do they give the food smell or taste... middle of paper... the balance of the ecosystem, and if a species is not unable to survive, it will cause the collapse of the food chain. Since genetically modified ingredients are not listed on nutrition labels, any extra iron or vitamin A will be unknown to the consumer. The consumer will not be aware of the danger he may be facing if he has a weak metabolism. A consumer may look at a label and think everything is perfectly fine, but is not aware of the presence of extra iron in the product made from genetically modified soy. Too much iron in a body can cause neurological damage to the brain. Other similar incidents can occur if the consumer's body is weak and cannot consume or react adequately to an overdose of a certain nutrient. Until genetically modified foods are safe to consume by any organism, they should not be produced or sold to the consumer. Consumers are unaware the food they are purchasing is labeled, and they are unaware of the health risk they are exposing themselves to. With all the problems with genetically modified foods, there isn't.
