The decisions we have made are based on our motivation. “Motivation” comes from the Latin verb movere (to move). It is what makes us initiate, direct, maintain, and stop our behaviors. Motivation is the needs, wants, interests, and desires that energize and direct behavior. There are two famous theories of motivation; Push theory (push) and incentive theory (pull). The push theory was raised by Clark Hull. Drive theory concerns internal states that arise in response to imbalance; we seek homeostasis, the tendency to maintain a constant internal state, ideal for survival, such as regulating body temperature. According to drive theory, physiological needs create an excited state of tension. Needs arise from the lack of something desirable or useful. People have both physiological and psychological needs. For example, we need oxygen and food to survive, physiological needs, we may need self-esteem or social approval, psychological needs, we often learn needs to survive. These are the units. A drive is an internal condition that can change over time and orients an individual towards one or more specific goals. We have different impulses with different goals. Drives push us to perform an action. Incentive theory is different from drive theory. Drive theory is about what drives people to act, but incentive theory is about the things that drive people to act. The incentive is the object we seek or the result we are trying to achieve... middle of paper... ...ization, we can be satisfied. Social workers can do their best to help others. Helping others become the meaning of their life. In this hierarchy, they will think that helping others is an important system of values and ethics that are more significant than esteem, love and belonging, security and money, etc. Therefore, there are many motivations for us to become social workers. In conclusion, motivations are important for taking action, for pushing us to initiate, direct, maintain and stop our behaviors. If we don't have motivation, we won't do anything or we won't be willing to act. Words: 1322 Reference: Weiten, W. (2013). Psychology: Themes and variations (9th ed.).
