When one begins to feel for the client and put themselves in their shoes, a social worker can be more effective in meeting the client's needs. In the study by Gerdes and Segal (2011) they concluded that “social work practitioners must develop their empathic skills to improve their effectiveness with clients and protect themselves with compassion or practice fatigue and burnout.” This shows that since a social service can attract a client like Joseph who may be facing many problems, having empathy can not only help the client get the help he needs, but also the social worker not to burn out in the case . Additionally, as a social worker interacts with a client like Joseph who shows signs of other problems, but does not indicate them, listening in assessment and critical thinking may be essential. “The ability to listen carefully is critical in social work skills because you want to hear the client's situation as they experienced it, which may be different from your expectations” (Birkenmaier & Weger, 2013). This shows that just as Joseph may be there for help in low-income housing, they may also be there for other help that the client doesn't know how to present. In the case of Joseph presenting with bruises it could be a sign that he wants the social worker to see them and observe them to seek help
