From my experience with technology, both here at UL and from my time in post-primary and primary school, particularly technology associated with society, the relationship that exists between the two factors is very complex, perhaps too complex even to separate one from the other. After attending this module for a few weeks, I began to question the relationship that exists and the fact that without technology society would be absolutely fragile and would eventually collapse. We must also ask ourselves that without a society like the one we live in today, would technologies be able to thrive as they are? Does the demand for technology in society drive its growth or does technology influence society and what it will become? We must consider all these variable factors when questioning the role of technology and society as they could be said to be interdependent on each other. Since we now see that technology and society are to some extent interdependent on each other, we must ask ourselves what exactly technology is. According to the program, "Technology can be represented as a tool through which society satisfies its needs and solves many of its problems." Black and Harrison in their 1994 publication seemed to agree, stating that “technology was invoked when practical solutions to problems were required.” (Black and Harrison, 1994, p.13) Both of these references suggest that technology is there to help us, helping us solve problems in our daily lives. However, we must question these practical solutions on the basis of: what are the problems? And then, who creates these problems? You could say that it is society as a whole that creates these problems which then creates a niche for these new technologies... middle of paper... experiential learning rather than the method of simple recall of information which was a method used in past. Numeracy and literacy in this country are also very low and therefore there is a great need for improvement in the society. Society at this moment requires it. What also struck me about the new framework is the quality of the evaluation. The framework states that students will be more accountable than they currently are by generating announcements that present evidence of their learning. Here technology and society are constantly being integrated as reports suggest that students leave schools too dependent on teachers and are not very used to thinking for themselves. Society requires that the creation of self-understanding be encouraged in them from an early age, such that the graduates produced are of a higher standard and full of independent thinking.
