Topic > Essay on Cultural Biases - 1037

When I reflect on my past experiences, cultural prejudices, beliefs, and values have played an important role in my decision-making process. Progressively, I learned that understanding patients' culture, beliefs, and values can be difficult; however, participation in providing culturally competent care in the workplace enhances knowledge and skills toward caring for diverse cultural populations. Additionally, examining the values and attitudes of myself and other cultures will prevent me from developing stereotypes. First, the past suicide incidents of my brother-in-law and my sister's friend gave me the strength to raise awareness about the risks associated with mental illnesses and the importance of early treatment. As an aspiring nurse practitioner with a desire to understand and help my patients, I believe that realizing this shortcoming and becoming aware of it will help me succeed in providing culturally competent care especially to vulnerable individuals.
