Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis portrays Gregor Samza as a breadwinner, someone who is depended on to keep the entire family out of poverty. However, Gregor later discovers that his hard work was the main catalyst for his death. A biography of Kafka's life highlights his awkward relationship with his father: “Kafka's father had a profound impact on both Kafka's life and writing. He was something of a tyrant, with an evil temper and little appreciation for his son's creative side” (Franz). The lives of Gregor Samza and Franz Kafka seem surprisingly congruent at times, a disturbing and problematic relationship with his family, while not feeling fully recognized for his hard work. Working hard to get ahead is a truism not a reality; In Kafka's “The Metamorphosis” Gregor works hard, but his hard work leads him to alienation. Gregor Samza is unknowingly persuaded by his family to work hard and take care of their needs. Kafka writes: “Well, there is still hope; once I save enough money to pay off my parents' debt to him - which should take another five or six years - I will do so without fail. That's when I'll make the big change” (kafka,54). Gregor, still in bed, late for work, thinks to himself about the day he can quit his job. He is bitter about the situation he finds himself in; however, still faithful to his family's needs. The debts he is paying are not his and show how loving Gregor is towards his family and can be easily exploited by them. When her family realizes that Gregor is still at home, they become worried: she had probably just gotten out of bed and hadn't started getting dressed yet. Well, why was he crying? Because he didn't want to get up and didn't let the prosecutor in, because he was me... among the papers... there, father and sister. Gregor, unknowingly, was never able to truly figure out what kind of person he really was or what he wanted to do for himself. In the time period in which “The Metamorphosis” takes place, a good income-generating job may not grow on trees, but the business idea is just as prevalent as it is today. If an individual fails to perform their duties in a company as an employee, they are noticed and are most likely on the verge of being fired. Gregor, however, is in a very different situation, which does not mean that the pressures of life cannot withstand the aforementioned "Biography of Franz Kafka". Bio.com.
