The New Plantation by Billy Hawkins examines the experiences and relationships that form between black athletes and predominantly white colleges (PWIs). College athletics has a large entertainment following in the United States, and many of the top athletes competing are black. These athletes are often stereotyped, do not receive a proper education, and have nothing more than a few years of athletic achievement while in college. Hawkins goes on to explain how less than 1% of student athletes are able to generate 90% of the revenue for the NCAA. Finally, there are examples of how some activists have tried to implement reforms and what can be done in the future to change the university landscape. The third chapter stands out because it provides a framework for the current issue of college athletics. It provides a reference to the duality that Black athletes face during college. They are seen not just as another student-athlete, but also as a Black individual.
