The retail industry includes businesses engaged in the retail sale of goods, generally without conversion, and the provision of services is incidental to the sale of goods. Retailers are organized to trade goods in small quantities to the public. This sector includes two main types: retailers and non-stores. Retail stores operate on a point-of-sale basis, which is identified and intended to attract casual customers. They typically sell goods to the public for personal or home consumption, but also serve corporate and institutional customers. Non-store retailers also serve the public, except that their retail patterns differ. They reach customers and market through other means such as broadcasting "advertisements", broadcasting and publishing direct response advertising, publishing paper and electronic catalogues, home demonstrations, door-to-door solicitations, selling from portable stalls ( street vendors, excluding food products) and distribution via vending machines. (North American Industry Classification System, 2012) The retail sector is among the largest sectors in the Republic of South Africa in terms of share of the workforce employed. It shows that the number of people employed in the retail sector increased by 25% from 2004 to 2008 before falling by 7% in 2010.
