Topic > The First American Colonists - 1268

The interaction between the English and Native Americans helped shape the development of the Virginia colony. The origins of the traditions held by the people of America date back to the moment when this land was first set foot by the human species and have worsened over time. Immigrants and slaves expanded the traditions of the original settlers. And, along with those, they brought their own religions and cultures which also added to the traditions of this country. The opportunity for England to discover, explore and settle new lands arose in the late 15th century. Competition to stake claims in the new world was out of control in many European countries. From the beginning of the 16th century England's main political attention was paid to the hostile situation with Spain. Spain and Portugal had already sent voyages to the New World and other voyages to explore the globe. The growing friction with Spain reached its peak during the second half of the 16th century. Aggressive relations with Spain paved the way for the colonization of America, but they were not the only reasons for the creation of colonies in the new world. Jamestown's first settlers were not expert explorers or lumberjacks, but dispossessed aristocrats with dreams of finding gold and silver. These men had never been exposed to routine labor and expected to rely only on Indians for labor and support. The inexperience of these early settlers ultimately led to the initial demise of Jamestown. ... middle of the paper ......... on the terrible day of judgment of dooming to be here, if my foremost intent and mind, in undertaking so important a matter, were not guided by the unbridled desire for carnal affection: but for the journey... guide the blind man to the right path." This is so annoying to Rolfe because he believes that if he doesn't, he will not go to heaven "...for my salvation." I Native Americans had peace for eight years. This peace was important to the English because they were still trying to establish a stable colony and with many men becoming ill, the English could not afford to go to war with the Native Americans that the marriage was able to succeed was because Powhatan knew that if he could convince the English to join the Native Americans they would be very powerful, meaning that if the English joined, their weapons would follow too..
