Dystopian societies follow a repeated trend in which information, independent thought, and freedom are limited. Citizens live in a dehumanized state and are perceived to be under constant surveillance. Harsh punishments are applied when the boundaries of group norms are tested. Throughout Amaryllis, authorities enforce strict restrictions against the out-of-control population growth affecting society. “Thirty-five years ago, my mother tore her implants…became pregnant…and destroyed her family…they were scattered across the region…” The consequences faced by Marie's mother highlight the harsh sanctions faced by citizens for pushing the boundaries for something that is considered a human right in today's society. The authorities also impose regulations on the quantity of products each family can use as it is "the only way to keep the population under control". The citizens of the underground mining corporation created by Mastroianni in Jordon's Waterhammer follow similar disciplinary rules. This is evident in the following eyewitness account from Jordon. “…I heard from the controller that Loader Solomon is violating the quota required by Ordinance 62.1.3. They pointed a particle gun at Solomon's temple. Solomon fell dead to the ground. Just like Marie's mother, Jordon's friend Solomon faces deadly consequences for exceeding the quota, showing the reader the level of strictness in society. On top of that, citizens who follow the rules are forced to live in harsh conditions that include “hearing checks from inside the brain” and “sleeping in a carefully monitored sarcophagus.” Although strict restrictions are enforced to “keep society in order,” citizens face inhumane conditions regardless of whether they break the law or obey it. This is an important feature that has been focused on
