IntroductionIn this report, I chose to study the pop dance culture in the Dancing Society of the University of Hong Kong (DANSO). The two main objectives of this report are to investigate the self-expression of DANSO members and the way their social relationships are structured. This report will begin by describing basic information about DANSO and the data collection method. The two main focuses of the study will then be presented based on the data collected. Context of the study. The Dancing Society (DANSO)DANSO is the only dance society at the University of Hong Kong. It was founded in 1960 and was initially called the Folk Dance Society as it initially only taught folk dance. Since more pop dance styles were introduced into the society, the society renamed itself Dancing Club in 1995. DANSO has 32 core members. In the team there are 10 boys and 22 girls from different faculties. Only 2 of them are mainland students while the rest are all local students. DANSO participates in various activities. Every year they launch an annual show and join the mass dance of the joint university. To prepare for these major events, they will have daily night workouts in the months leading up to the major events.ii. Pop dancePop dance is a general term that describes several genres of popular street dance styles such as Hip-Hop, Funk Jazz, Locking, Breaking and Popping. Pop music is an important element incorporated into pop dance as pop dance needs strong interaction with the rhythms of music. Some common characteristics of pop music include uptempo melodies, simple lyrics, strong rhythms and grooves, prominent hooks (referring to impressive phrases of lyrics or melodies).Data CollectionTo achieve study objectives, an i..... . half of the article ......through conversation with DANSO members and observation of their practices, I have some understanding of dancers' views on pop dance and their beliefs in self-challenge and perfectionism. The way people express themselves in dance varies: some express themselves outwardly through special tricks and tricks while others express themselves internally through a deeper understanding of the music and the interaction of dance movements. Additionally, dancing in society helps freshmen and non-local students transition to a new life at the University. From the social aspect, DANSO is a well-organized company with its own culture. The criteria for admission to society include self-discipline, responsibility, a spirit of self-challenge and the abandonment of individualism and selfishness. All these requirements contribute to the development of team spirit and a sense of belonging to DANSO.
