Fences was written in 1983 by author August Wilson. Fences is a playwright in August Wilson's ten-part Pittsburgh cycle. Fences is about the life in the 1950s of the main character Troy Maxson, his family and friends. Troy's conflict with the time he grew up in interferes with his love and character. The Maxson family has endured many broken relationships throughout the show due to what the men describe as a breadwinner of the family. There was still a lot of segregation in the 1950s, but not as much as when Troy was younger. This was the uprising of black people like Jackie Robison and other black athletes and musicians. Troy Maxson couldn't understand it because his mind was so fixated on the times when Negroes were separated from European Americans. This led to Troy's character projecting negativity based on racism, age, and views on life. Troy was the typical illiterate older man who was fed up with not having “a pot to piss in and a window to throw it out of” (28). The main conflict in this story is that Troy is so used to being segregated that he fails to notice that more opportunities are available to his boys during their time as young adults. Rose tells him that "times are changing and you don't even know it" (40) during the troy young adult as if however he is not allowed to play baseball professionally because he is black and the "Negro League" didn't have many advantages for It. It's ironic that he believed it enough to go to the union to drive the garbage truck without a license, yet he absolutely doesn't say his son plays college football even though the recruiter was coming over and offering Cory a scholarship. Troy often mentions "the white man", the "crackers"(38), the "white fellows" which shows that he racists...... center of the card ......, even Troy's brother there is no one else in the story in the show there is a family member but the father is mentioned. Gabriel is really important because he plays a big role in Troy's character and he feels guilty about how he has to provide for his family. Troy tells Rose that it's his fault that half of Gabriel's head was blown off during the war and that he feels guilty for using Gabriel's $3,000 to buy the house (28). Fences is a book by Plume and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. August Wilson's brilliant works were raved about and are still popular after his death in 2005. Troy Maxson's conflict and character affected everyone around him mostly for the worse. It was difficult to read about Troy Maxson because of the narrow-minded character that I grew increasingly displeased with throughout the show. However the story had a very twisted ending and I was ecstatic to hear that Cory had succeeded in the Marines.
