Many people search for the true meaning of life. These ambitious souls maximize their days to make full use of their limited time and do their best to live to the fullest. This ambitious mentality does not resonate with Meursault in Camus' The Stranger. Meursault is a depressing young boy from Algiers who believes that his life, and that of everyone else, is useless. Life, according to Meursault, is an obligatory task. He spends every day the same way, following the same set routine that he limits himself to. He displays a disturbing amount of indifference and is disappointingly absent-minded. This personality continues until he kills a man and has to face the trials and tribulations of dealing with the law. Raymond and Salomano symbolize things that Meursault lacks: Raymond is a symbol of aggression and Salomano serves as a symbol of love. Raymond is an aggressive man who beats the woman he thinks is cheating on him. «I would slap her a little, but in a nice way, you might say. He would scream a little. I close the shutters and it always ends the same way. But this time it's true. And in my opinion, he still hasn't gotten what he expected” (31). Raymond and Meursault are good friends, but this anger never rubs off on Meursault. Raymond asked him what he thought of the whole situation, and instead of supporting his friends or showing rational disgust, he replied, “I didn't think anything other than that it was interesting” (32). Meursault has difficulty showing any emotion, he sees no point in showing emotion towards his best friend, and Raymond's aggression is so extreme that it highlights how passive Meursault is. Camus uses the same technique of contrasting the characters when Salomano loses his dog. Old Solomon had a mangy dog and despite it being an abusive relationship, the old man was able to maintain a friendship with the animal. The dog disappears and Salomano is crushed, realizing how much his beaten friend means to him. While Meursault consults him in his apartment, Salomano assumes that he must be very sad about his mother's death. Meursault did not respond. Salomano cries and confesses his life to him over the disappearance of a dog, and Meursault is indifferent to his mother's death. The actions of Raymond and Salomano show how apathetic Meursault is and how his outlook on life does not allow
