Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27, 1906 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The son of an alcoholic father and a very religious mother, Gein grew up alongside his older brother, Henry, in a household ruled by his mother who preached the sins of carnal desire. With effeminate behavior, Ed Gein became a target for bullies. Classmates and teachers brought up past mannerisms, such as seemingly casual laughter, as if he were laughing at his own personal jokes. His mother scolded him every time he tried to make friends, so he didn't try anymore because of the pain it caused him. Not being distracted by social life, he did well in school, especially in reading. (http://www.biography.com/people/ed-gein-11291338). His Father's Death After their father died of a heart attack in 1940, the Gein brothers began doing odd jobs to help with expenses. Both brothers were trustworthy and honest towards the community. While they both worked as handymen, Ed Gein also babysat neighbors. She loved babysitting because she related better to children than to adults. Henry Gein left his mother's worldview and began to worry about his brother's attachment to her. He spoke badly of her in his brother's presence, so much so that Ed would have done the same thing to let go of his overly obsessive attachment. When Gein heard that his house had burned down, he shrugged and said just as well. In 1958, the car that Gein had used to move the bodies of his victims was sold at public auction for $760 to a carnival sideshow operator named Bunny Gibbons. Later, after purchasing it, Gibbons charged everyone 25 cents to see it. (http://murderpedia.org/male.G/g/gein-edward.htm). Death On July 26, 1984, Gein died of respiratory and heart failure due to cancer in the Mendota Mental Health Institute. His grave in Plainfield Cemetery has often been vandalized over the years, people chipping off pieces of his headstone as a keepsake before the entire piece was stolen in 2000. The headstone was found around June 2001 near Seattle and is now in a museum in Waushara County, Wisconsin. (http://murderpedia.org/male.G/g/gein-edward.htm).
