Topic > Analysis of Elie Wiesel's Autobiography - 'Night'

What would you do if you were removed from your home and taken to a strange new place? Night by Elie Wiesel is a true story about his life during World War II, where he learns to have courage and never give up during his struggles. Night is a great autobiography to read for its descriptive settings, fascinating characters, and true historical plot. This book is set during World War II in Hungarian Transylvania and several concentration camps. The story begins in Eliezer's home, an apartment in a city called Sighet. Other settings in the book are the different concentration camps where Eliezer and his father are prisoners. In each place, Eliezer learns to survive and becomes more and more of a man. All the people in the book are real humans that Elie has met. The author Eliezer is the main character. During the time of the book, he is a Jewish teenager studying Torah and Kabbalah. Eliezer's father, Shlomo, thought Elie was too young to study Torah and Kabbalah, so Elie learned them secretly with Moshe the Beadle, a poor man who worked in the synagogue. Shlomo went through the same experiences as Eliezer but never saw freedom again. Elie also had three sisters and his mother who were alive at the beginning of the story. All these real people play an important role in this story. When Germany occupied Hungary in 1944, all of Sighet's Jews were forced to live in ghettos. Afterwards they were all packed into cattle cars for many days and nights without food or water and sent to Auschwitz. Auschwitz was the main concentration camp during World War II, and approximately 1.1 million prisoners died at Auschwitz. Eliezer was separated from his entire family. Elie and Shlomo never saw E...... middle of paper ......d was like going through extremely difficult times and struggles. Elie was only 16 years old when he lost his entire family. How tragic it would be to see all the people you have known and loved your entire life taken away. I have lost two close people in my life, so I know how it feels to lose someone. However, I could never imagine losing my entire family at once in such a terrible and cruel way. I find it very encouraging how, despite everything he has been through, Wiesel has continued with his life and taught others about his experiences. Eliezer was very brave and strong in overcoming the holocaust and the terrible memories. I find learning about the Holocaust very intriguing. This real life autobiography was a beautiful historical story with real life people, descriptive setting and historical plot. I learned more about World War II and the Holocaust through this book.
