Active teenagers require 2000-5000 calories per day (Children's Health). Healthy choices may be available, but do kids actually eat the food? According to waste statistics, the answer to this question is “No”. The Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act originated in 2010, new updated guidelines implemented in 2012 include the following: increased amounts of fruits and vegetables, calorie limits based on age group, reduction of fat and sodium. All schools were required to implement the changes in 2012-2013. One of the changes implemented due to the huge amount of waste was “offer versus service”. In the updated guidelines, this was another requirement. The term “offer versus service” was coined to reduce waste: students can refuse some of the food offered that they do not intend to eat (USDA Food and Nutrition Service np). This supports the fact that students were not eating the healthy choices they were served. As a result, a student's calorie intake was now a health risk as they were not getting enough to support their growing body. Another point to consider with calorie guidelines and placing a limit on a child's calorie intake is that these figures do not consider the athlete; who needs to double or triple their calorie intake to support 2 hours of training in the morning and 2-3 hours after school, or
