When it comes to adulthood and aging, I think depression can be a big problem. There are many changes and obstacles that people go through over the years. When you're younger, life seems so easy. You had no trouble seeing, you could run and move quickly, and you could hear someone across the room. Later you will start to notice age spots, graying of hair, the fact that it takes a little longer to get out of bed in the morning. You may be battling different illnesses or diseases that take much longer to recover from when you were younger. It is also very difficult when you start losing people you care about, parents, siblings, friends or even your significant other. In my research article I will define depression, talk about some symptoms and treatment options. I will also describe some of the normal age-related changes and life situations as you get older and how depression relates to this. I will then talk about how you can reduce your chances of suffering from depression. To begin this research paper, I should start by defining depression. Depression is a very serious medical illness that leaves you with a constant feeling of sadness or lack of interest in anything. Depression needs to be treated immediately because it could eventually lead to self-harm or even suicide. Depression is common in older adults but is not a normal part of aging. It may be overlooked for some older adults because sadness is not their primary symptom. They may have other, less obvious symptoms of depression or may not be willing to talk about their feelings. Therefore, doctors may be less likely to recognize that their patient is suffering from depression. Depression can occur for a variety of reasons, such as other medical problems, ... middle of paper ... or medications. Sometimes, when seniors have illnesses or diseases, the side effects of their medications can be depression, so an easy fix for their doctor to do is to change their medications. In my research paper I talked about depression in older adults and some reasons why it can happen. I have also included a couple of research articles to support my argument. I think aging can be very difficult for people and depression is a major problem that can be avoided if addressed immediately. I enjoyed writing this research paper and reading a number of different articles on this topic. I know depression doesn't affect everyone because everyone is different, but I think it's a big enough problem to be worth discussing. I hope people become more aware of depression in older adults so they can get the help they need!
