Speech recognition is the process by which the computer uses special software that allows the computer to absorb what is said by one or more specific human beings and be able to translate it into language of the computer so that the computer could now act according to the instructions given to it. Just as clicking the mouse, typing on the keyboard, or pressing a key on the phone keypad provides input to an application, speech recognition allows you to provide input by speaking. Voice is basically just another user interface, an input method, like using a mouse or keyboard. According to Webster, speech recognition simply "converts spoken words into text." If you are not familiar with the term speech recognition, you use other terms such as automatic speech recognition, computer speech recognition, and text-to-speech recognition. Speech recognition works like this: First you speak into a microphone connected to a computer with the speech recognition program running. Some speech recognition software, to name a few, are VoiceAttack (used in games), Trigamtech (feature for medical users), and WRSToolkit (for dictionary and grammar). As you say what you would like the computer to do for you, as you speak you would see the words as you say them appear on the screen.
