Topic > College Student Development: Emerging Adulthood

College Student Development Emerging adulthood is a period of life between adolescence and full-fledged adulthood, and college students are one of the groups particulars who are experiencing emerging adulthood. Students' possessiveness is not yet as high as that of mature adults, so they cannot make correct judgments about every situation. Since the Internet has spread throughout the world, more and more people, especially college students, are using the Internet regardless of the day. However, the Internet is like a double-edged sword and also brings with it negative effects. Indeed, the Internet causes students to spend less time studying and communicating physically, as well as harming their physical and mental health. There are many different types of entertainment on the Internet, such as video games. Some students become addicted to these entertainments and no longer put as much effort into studying as they used to. Lee Kem in his article “Games Addicted Students” states that 65% of girls and 85% of boys are gamers, and one of the eight players develops addiction (para.8). As it turns out, many students spend a lot of time playing online games rather than studying. Initially they may play during free time, but gradually, their immature mind leads them to play involuntarily regardless of day and night. Kem further supports his idea that many college students generally prefer to play games rather than spend time on their academic studies (para. 9). Because high school life and college life are completely different, many students do not adjust to this transition. They feel that college life is cruel, so they want to escape the real world and enjoy the online world. As a result, together… middle of paper… they will also be more likely to suffer injuries, as they may feel sleepy while working or studying. As a result, the Internet is one of the main effective factors that harm the health of college students. The Internet causes college students to have an unhealthy lifestyle and harms them physically and mentally. It also causes college students to spend less time studying and communicating in person. To get away from such a harmful lifestyle, college students should learn how to use the Internet properly. Furthermore, they also need to improve their ability to distinguish right from wrong, because information on the Internet contains incorrect messages. Furthermore, college students should also cultivate a lifelong habit of reading. At the same time, they should attend more social activities to improve their interpersonal skills.
